Deconstructing Power: A Framework

As we work towards creating anti-racist workplaces and communities, it’s crucial to understand the role of power and privilege in perpetuating systemic racism. Power and privilege are often invisible and taken for granted, but they play a significant role in shaping our social systems and creating inequalities. Because of this, Unscripted Consult developed the Deconstructing Power Framework, which provides tools for recognizing and dismantling these structures.

What is the Deconstructing Power Framework?

The Deconstructing Power Framework is a tool for understanding the ways in which power and privilege operate in our society, particularly in the context of systemic racism. It explores how power is distributed unequally in society and how privilege is often conferred to certain groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, and socioeconomic status. The framework also looks at how these power dynamics impact individuals and groups differently, creating systemic barriers to equality and justice.

How does the Deconstructing Power Framework work?

The Deconstructing Power Framework provides a lens through which to analyze various systems and institutions in our society, including workplaces, schools, and government. It involves asking critical questions about who holds power, who benefits from the current system, and who is left behind. By examining the ways in which power and privilege operate, we can begin to identify and challenge the structures that perpetuate systemic racism.

One way to use the framework is to apply it to specific scenarios. For example, in the workplace, we can ask questions such as:

  • Who holds decision-making power in the organization?
  • Are certain groups of employees disproportionately represented in positions of power or leadership?
  • How does the organization’s culture reinforce or challenge power dynamics?

By using the Deconstructing Power Framework to critically examine workplace systems and practices, we can begin to identify areas for change and work towards creating more equitable and anti-racist workplaces.
