Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training has become an essential component of many organizations’ efforts to create a more inclusive workplace culture. With the increasing use of technology in the workplace, it has become possible to deliver DEI training in a more efficient and effective way. However, this approach also comes with its own unique set of opportunities and challenges. In this blog post, we will explore the pros and cons of leveraging technology in DEI training and how Unscripted Consult’s Anti-Racism Certification Program is addressing these issues.

Opportunities of Leveraging Technology in DEI Training

  1. Increased Accessibility: One of the main advantages of using technology in DEI training is the increased accessibility it provides. Remote and asynchronous training options can be more accessible to employees who work in different time zones, have family obligations, or have disabilities that make traditional in-person training difficult.
  2. Customization: Technology enables DEI training to be more customized to an organization’s specific needs. Modules can be tailored to address the unique challenges and opportunities of a particular workplace, making the training more relevant and engaging.
  3. Data Collection: With the use of technology, it is easier to collect and analyze data related to DEI training. Organizations can track participation, completion rates, and feedback to better understand the effectiveness of the training program.

Challenges of Leveraging Technology in DEI Training

  1. Digital Fatigue: The overuse of technology in the workplace can lead to digital fatigue, causing employees to disengage from training materials.
  2. Technological Barriers: Some employees may not have access to the technology needed to participate in remote training or may have limited digital literacy skills.
  3. Lack of Personal Connection: Technology can make it difficult to establish a personal connection between the trainer and trainee, which is essential for creating an inclusive workplace culture.

How Unscripted Consult is Addressing These Challenges

Our certification program incorporates a variety of training methods, including in-person, remote, and asynchronous options to keep participants engaged and motivated throughout the training process. This variety in training methods requires us to be intentional in creating materials that are accessible to those with disabilities and/or limited digital literacy skills.

We believe that a strong emphasis should be placed on creating a personal connection between the trainer and trainee. Because of this, our trainers use video conferencing and chat platforms to provide one-on-one coaching and support to participants, and peer-to-peer collaboration through our online learning community. This creates a space for the sharing of best practices and improves relationships overall.
