How Unscripted Consult is Building Capacity for Sustaining Anti-Racism Efforts
Organizations across the country struggle to address issues of racism and bias within their own structures, leading to negative impacts on workplace culture, productivity, and employee morale.
In 2022, Unscripted Consult was established as a response to the lack of organizational capacity in sustaining anti-racism and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. Back in 2017, I founded Diversity Talks, a non-profit organization that specializes in training high school students to facilitate anti-racism professional development for their teachers and administrators.
Through this experience, I witnessed firsthand the challenges organizations were facing when implementing DEI initiatives:
- Unconscious biases and stereotypes that are deeply ingrained in the company culture.
- Difficulty in addressing and dismantling systemic barriers and structures that perpetuate inequity.
- Lack of buy-in from leadership teams who fail to see the value in DEI initiatives.
- Lack of proper funding, resources and support to sustain the efforts of people of color who are placed in DEI positions.
- Difficulty in measuring the effectiveness of DEI initiatives and demonstrating their return on investment.
- Lack of diversity in recruitment and hiring processes, resulting in homogenous teams.
- Failure to address intersectionality and the unique challenges faced by people with multiple marginalized identities.
- Resistance from employees who feel that DEI initiatives give certain groups an unfair advantage.
- Lack of accountability for individuals and teams who fail to uphold the company’s commitment to DEI.
These issues + some contributed to a lack of capacity in sustaining anti-racism and DEI efforts in many organizations. Because of this, I created a space where individuals could receive the necessary training and tools to become effective anti-racism trainers and advocates in their own organizations.
At Unscripted Consult, we offer an Anti-Racism Certification Program that equips trainers with the necessary knowledge, skills, and tools to lead effective anti-racism and DEI initiatives in their respective organizations. Our program prioritizes leadership development and training to create workplace cultures that are free from oppressive societal standards and norms. By sharing my insights through Unscripted Consult, I aim to establish a community of leaders who are committed to addressing instances of racism and discrimination in the workplace.
